Why We Choose European-Formulated Skincare at Viaura

Why We Choose European-Formulated Skincare at Viaura

When you choose skincare, you probably think about what it does: how well it moisturizes, how comfortable it feels, and whether it suits your skin.

But there’s another question worth asking:

What standards stand behind the formula?

At Viaura Wellness, European formulation is an important part of our product selection. It’s one reason we chose European-formulated skincare for Avelle—and why that same sourcing direction extends to our hair care and body care collections.

To understand that choice, it helps to look beyond the front of the bottle.

What Does European-Formulated Mean?

“European-formulated” describes where a product’s formula was developed. On its own, the phrase doesn’t tell you everything about its ingredients, manufacturing, or performance.

The standards governing products sold in the European Union add another layer to the story.

The EU has a detailed cosmetic regulatory framework covering product safety, restricted ingredients, labeling, and the responsibilities of businesses bringing cosmetics to market.

For us, that framework is worth understanding. It gives substance to a conversation that can otherwise become a collection of appealing words on a label.

A Safety Report Before a Product Reaches the EU Market

One important feature of EU cosmetic regulation is the requirement for a cosmetic product safety report before a product is placed on the market.

That assessment considers the finished product: its composition, how it will be used, and the exposure involved. It goes beyond looking at whether individual ingredients sound familiar or unfamiliar.

EU rules also require a designated responsible person within the European Union and notification through a centralized cosmetic products portal.

These requirements create defined responsibilities behind the products consumers buy. Notification is not government approval, but it is part of a structured system of accountability.

Ingredient Rules Look Beyond a Simple Yes or No

An ingredient’s suitability depends on more than its name.

How much is used? Is the product rinsed off or left on the skin? Where is it applied? How often will someone use it?

European cosmetic rules include prohibited substances, restrictions on certain ingredients, and lists of permitted preservatives, colorants, and UV filters.

Those details matter because a cleanser and a face cream are used differently. An ingredient suitable for one type of product may require different limits or conditions in another.

This is why we find the standards behind a formula more useful than a dramatic headline about how many ingredients a country bans.

How Does This Compare With the United States?

The United States also requires cosmetics to be safe. Under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, known as MoCRA, the responsible person must maintain records supporting adequate safety substantiation.

So the difference is not that one market cares about safety and the other does not.

The systems have different requirements and approaches. The EU’s formal product safety report, ingredient restrictions, and defined responsibilities are meaningful features of its framework—and part of why we value European formulation.

European origin alone doesn’t guarantee that a product is better for every person. What matters is the combination of the formula, the standards behind it, and how well it meets your needs.

Why We Look Beyond the Word “Clean”

“Clean beauty” can sound reassuring, but it doesn’t explain much by itself.

We would rather help you understand what a product contains, what those ingredients contribute, and where it fits into your routine.

A botanical extract may help condition the skin. Hyaluronic acid may support hydration. A preservative helps protect a formula from microbial contamination.

Each has a purpose.

Natural origin alone does not establish safety, just as a long ingredient name does not establish that something is harmful. The complete formula—and how it is intended to be used—deserves attention.

That’s the thinking behind our “Meet the Ingredients” sections: a clearer look at the ingredients that give each product its character and purpose.

When an Ingredient Raises a Safety Concern

Differences in cosmetic standards can have practical consequences for the products we use.

Consider methylisothiazolinone, sometimes abbreviated as MI. This preservative helps protect products against microbial growth, but it can also cause allergic skin reactions.

The European Union prohibited MI in leave-on cosmetics—including products such as face creams and certain wipes—following a scientific assessment of its potential to cause contact allergy.

This illustrates why the details behind a formula matter. A preservative’s purpose, its concentration, and whether a product stays on your skin all influence its suitability.

For consumers, the useful question goes beyond “Is this ingredient allowed?” It also includes: “Under what conditions—and what safety concerns have regulators identified?”

That attention to formulation standards is part of why we value European-formulated care at Viaura.
